Natural History Repeats Itself
Submitted by Leila on 9 June 2012 - 8:32pmAaaah.... Back to familiar ground. My Natural History Collection is expanding into a fabric range. I am just so captivated by the ease with which nature's forms create art. It's so unassuming. So clean in its simplicity and lyrical with every line. I love that I don't need to change a thing....it just is.
I found this dried out aloe and formidable thorns a block away from my house in Darling...on someone's discarded garden refuse - waiting for the collection truck. Darlinger's have some truly beautiful gardens...
I will feel a little sad to leave here.
The beach is so close.... and my sea snail and shell collection is now cumbersome in it's enormity ....
Churchhaven - the beach in the nature reserve of Langebaan lagoon has some really interesting ancient shells that I find sticking out of the very bottom layers of sand dunes.
The blue grey centipede / shongologo was lying high on top - bleached into paleness from its original rich brown black shininess by the relentless summer sun.
Once, on a walk I found 23 seagull skeletons in a sand dune. By chance. I saw a yellowing bone sticking out of the sand and as I pulled it- the rest tumbled down, revealing bone upon bone. Skulls of all sizes. even the delicate rings of cartilage around the legs. they blew away in the wind as I lifted them ...
Shards from the Karoo... and Lo! I even found shards around my own garden! Stamps from my husbands old childhood collection...can you spot the stamp?
I'm dreaming up something special for all this ....I hope it all comes true : )
For The Boys : 'pin-ups' Arty Style
Submitted by Leila on 9 June 2012 - 6:41pmProject: Nude's for print / poster art. I hated these till I added the details ...still kitsch - but hey! the kitsch is cool! : D
I can do that! Cute Art: Check.
Submitted by Leila on 9 June 2012 - 4:30pmSo they asked me to do some cute art (read: kitsch - they even sent examples) - for gift cards. I was like...wa-a-a-ah??? And then I told my 8 year old and he started drawing and next thing you know... I was right there in his cute little world with him.... So this is some of what I did - with art direction from Jude Fanner - Rather Serious Art Guy, aged 8.
Oh, and it gave me a chance to try out my new scanner: Epson Perfection - their words, not mine : )

OKay, I'll stop now ; )...
